It would be the most obvious choice to end today with Leiber and Stoller’s last big hit “Stuck In The Middle With You,” which was repopularized in the 90s by Taratino’s famous use of it in Reservoir Dogs. I would rather not picture Michael Madsen dancing around while torturing cops. I would rather dream of being a star, “On Broadway.”
Leiber and Stoller wrote some fantastic songs in the 60s, most notably Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me.” But my favorite of theirs from the period is “I (Who Have Nothing)”, originally recorded by King, but made famous by Shirley Bassey.
Jerry Leiber passed away last week. This T4T is dedicated to him and his partner, Mike Stoller, who wrote some of the most iconic rock songs of the 50s, 60s and 70s.
This was their first huge hit, written originally for Big Mama Thorton, but made famous by The King.
