Christian Siriano has moved up in the world, from “former Project Runway contestant” to “star judge of Project Runway: Junior,” the show’s first genuinely successful popular spin-off since Lifetime started attempting to find one when they won the battle for the rights to the program. His line continues to be the only major success story from the franchise, participating in not only the runway seasons, but also the off-season offerings, a step that some much fancier design houses cannot claim.
Unfortunately, when it comes to the clothing, one might argue that Siriano needs a few more years in the project Runway oven. Prior off-seasons saw him going freakishly neon, with only the over the top ball gowns working as stand alone pieces. (It should be noted though, that they worked so well, Lupita even wore one.) The same situation seems to have come about with this year’s PreFall line. The opening looks, all Jackie Onasis blowing her nose type looks, with large hats and questionable design choices, are not terrible, but not all that captivating. The truth is Siriano’s talent and strength lie in the evening wear world, and this collection is a reminder of that. One the line crosses from day to evening, it crosses into fabulous.
