It was a year ago this season when Peter Copping was thrust into the spotlight as head of Oscar de la Renta. Hired mere weeks before de la Renta passed, the promised collaboration that would have brought about a slow passing of the torch was suddenly off the table, and Copping was left rather to cope.
One year later, Copping has found himself comfortably at the head of the stories label. His push to put his own stamp on the designs has been a slow one, with the knowledge that the Fashion Industry would not react well to losing de la Renta’s style and vision so quickly after losing the man himself. Despite claiming that this collection was very much him, it still reeks of the OdlR style, with gowns with near clashing tops and bottoms, lots of large laces, and of course, ball gowns for days. Copping has clearly decided the best was to move forward is to take that framework that OdlR set out and build within it, until the subtle changes take over when no one noticed.
