2016 Tony Nominations Announced

Gather around Hamiltrash friends, and let us watch together and see if the Tony Awards can somehow magically find 16 categories in which to nominate Lin-Manuel Miranda’s baby, in order to ensure it breaks at least one record held by The Producers. (Spoiler alert: they did! Hamilton now holds the record for most nominations of all time. Sorry Mel Brooks.)

Even if Hamilton somehow does not at least tie Mel Brook’s smash from 2001 in nominations, this year’s Tony awards are notable for the sheer scale of diversity. If (and it’s not nearly the as iffy as that makes it sound) Hamilton takes the awards for Best Actor (Miranda v Odom), Best Supporting Actor (Diggs v Jackson), and Best Supporting Actress (Goldberry v no competition), and The Color Purple takes Best Actress (sorry Soo, but Cynthia Erivo is considered a shoo in here, and one of the few places Hamilton will probably lose) that means that the entire quartet in the Best Musical division will go to people of color. Your move, Oscars.

The live stream kicks off at 8:30am, and we’ll be updating as we go.

After a long pause to get CBS’s This Morning on board, we finally get to the nominees:

(Holy crap, what the heck was that? It was like the TV people decided to run over the actual announcements with the sexy Hamilton announcement because they only had 90 seconds. One could see the amazing relief by all involved when they were allowed to let those terrible TV people cut away and we could all go back to what they were doing.)
