I’ll be honest–I don’t quite know what to do with this. Look, I know, Hollywood is out of ideas and all that. But it’s one thing to reboot Star Trek, a fandom that basically started the concept of the convention. Or for Disney to remake their animated catalog as live action movies now that technology has caught up–after all, these are beloved children’s tales that have become the default images of fairy tales. or sequels to The X-Files or Twin Peaks, cult classics type stuff.
Independence Day isn’t any of those things. It’s a throwaway blockbuster, like Armageddon that somehow managed to be slightly better than it had any right to. But it’s not a good movie. Why does it have a sequel twenty years on?
And why does that sequel look good? I’m so confused.
