The BBC has announced that filming will commence for Doctor Who Series 10, and Steven Moffat’s last turn behind the wheel of the franchise. With principle photography scheduled to begin next week, they have also released details on the upcoming season as well.
Keep in mind, this is filming for Season 10, and not for the Christmas special that proceeds it. That traditionally filmed in the fall anyway,. and will probably be amended onto the regular season filming schedule.
But even with details skipping over this coming Christmas, we do know that one figure from the 2015 Christmas special will be back. Matt Lucas of Peaky Blinders fame, has a small part as the hapless Nardole, who came and found the Doctor on accident while looking for an actual surgeon. Now, according to the BBC, he’ll be back for Season 10, and will be hanging out on the TARDIS for at least a full episode.
Lucas isn’t the only Peaky Blinders alumni to be hanging on the TARDIS with the Doctor and new companion Bill, played by Pearl Mackie. Stephanie Hyam will also be joining them.
Commenting on his return to Doctor Who, Matt Lucas, said:
“I’m chuffed to bits that Nardole is returning to the TARDIS for some more adventures. I loved acting with Peter and I’m excited to work with Pearl.”
No titles as of yet for the episode, but the BBC confirms that the series premiere is being written by Moffatt, while the second episode will be penned by novelist Frank Cottrell-Boyce. (Cottrell-Boyce last wrote the Doctor Who Season 8 episode “In The Forest of The Night,” which is the one everyone complained didn’t make any logical sense.) The fact that we have two different writers for the first two episodes, and also different directors (newcomer Lawrence Gough is slated for the premiere, but no director is listed for episode 2) suggests that after a season of nearly all two parters, Moffatt is back to giving that format a rest.
The second block of filming, which will be later this summer, will also feature writers Sarah Dollard and Mike Bartlett. Dollard did last season’s excellent episode “Face the Raven.” I’m very pleased to see her back again.
