It’s retro within retro for this mashup of Sesame Street lip syncing to the 1991 Will Smith/Jazzy Jeff hit “Summertime.”
Not that HBO would consider running things like this, but they should consider the wealth of these sorts of mash ups running around YouTube if they’re looking for “edgy” ways to promote their children’s show acquisition.
By the way, people might not have noticed, but it was quietly announced a month ago that the three oldest cast members of Sesame Street–Bob McGrath, Emilio Delgado (Luis) and Roscoe Orman (Gordon)–were let go and won’t be returning for HBO second season. Susan (played by Loretta Long) will remain.
There are quite a few people who are horrified by HBO doing this, but it’s not that surprising. Already I’ve heard parents say it’s not the same show. But I think that was obvious to anyone who noticed the timing of Sonia Manzano’s sudden retirement announcement last summer. The actress who played Maria had always been the savviest of the group, and her announcement–which was literally days ahead of the HBO announcement–suggested she took one look at this deal and knew if she didn’t exit of her own accord, someone would probably do it for her sooner rather than later.
