Peter Capaldi Hints At a Different Regeneration Cycle In Doctor Who Series 10

Our current theory that the Doctor will be regenerating over multiple episodes gets a boost as Capaldi hints this regeneration will not be “straightforward.”

It started with a glimpse of the Doctor regenerating in the second Doctor Who series 10 trailer back at the beginning of April.

At the time, the question that sprung to everyone’s mind was “But Capaldi’s signed through the Christmas special in December! How can this be happening so soon?” But with Moffat proclaiming a huge spoiler would be happening in episode 2, the question that sprang to my mind (especially with the background of the Doctor’s regeneration shot looking suspiciously like the Emojibot planet), the question I think we should be asking is:

“The Doctor can’t be regenerating almost the whole season can he?”

But why not? After all, David Tennant supposedly spent days and days going and looking in on his former companions to see how they were doing between the time he started the regeneration process, and turning into Matt Smith. Why can’t Capaldi’s Doctor spend episode upon episode in a somehow slowed-down regenerating state? I mean how much more Moffaty can one get?

And now Capaldi is suggesting in a new interview that That May Be Just It. In an interview with The New York Times ahead of this week’s premiere, he stated:

{Regeneration is} more complicated than that. There’s this notion now that it’s the same process he’s gone through every time, and that’s not true. It’s only the last couple of regenerations that have been, as it were, fairly straightforward ones. I can’t go into the details of a lot of it, because I know what happens, but I don’t know how it happens.

Doctor Who: Always Be Regenerating. We’ll find out how right this theory is at the end of the premiere episode, when the Next Time trailer reveals the big spoiler for the second episode “Smile”.

While we wait, here’s the official introduction for episode one from the Doctor Who YouTube Channel.

A video intro to Bill, the latest companion.

And a little “What to expect when you’re expecting Doctor Who Series 10” teaser.
