The Trailer for the Doctor Who Christmas Special Has More Surprises Than a Regeneration

We’re having a triple Doctor Christmas, and they’ll be joined by a special friend.

The Doctor Who panel at San Diego Comic Con blessed us with the new trailer for Doctor Who‘s upcoming Xmas special, and it’s going to be a beautiful day.

Not only do we have the double act of Capaldi as the 12th Doctor and David Bradley as William Hartnell’s first Doctor. (Who, we should note were both the same age when they retired from the role.) We have Mark Gatiss’ swan song with the program.

And everyone’ favorite latest companion. Yes, Bill. Is. Back.

What does it mean though? Last year it was sort of accepted that at the end of the season, everyone was toast. New showrunner gets to cast their new Doctor, and companion, a la Moffat’s take over from Davies, moving from Tennant and Rose/Martha/Donna to Smith and Amy Pond. Chibnall has already cast his Doctor, which we’re very excited about. But no companion has been announced yet.

And Pearl Mackie apparently interviewed with Chibnall about a week before the final season ended….

Certainly introducing a new Doctor is easier when the companion is already a known quantity (See Tennant’s and Capaldi’s respective take overs.) And with such a big jump to a female Doctor, perhaps keeping the last female companion in the picture would make the transition slightly easier.

But5 let’s not count our chickens before they hatch. Right now we know we get to go at least one final round with Bill before we say goodbye to Capaldi for good. And that’s how it should be.
